NOA SENSITISES AKWA IBOM RESIDENTS ON RISING TEMPERATURE ASSOCIATED WITH EL NIÑO CLIMATE PHENOMENON.
The National Orientation Agency, Akwa Ibom State Directorate, has urged residents of the state on the need to take precautionary measures against the effects of rising temperatures associated with changing climatic conditions.
The State Director, Akwa Ibom Directorate, Mr Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, urged residents to pay attention to their health and safety as the state experiences increased temperatures, which may expose people to excessive heat and related health challenges.
Mr Mkpoutom explained that prolonged exposure to high temperatures could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, older persons, outdoor workers, and people with existing health vulnerabilities.
He advised residents to drink sufficient clean water, wear light and breathable clothing, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods of the day. He also encouraged residents to stay in cool, well-ventilated places whenever possible.
The State Director further urged parents and caregivers to pay special attention to children and older persons, ensuring that they remain hydrated and protected from excessive heat. He also advised residents to seek medical attention if they experience warning signs such as dizziness, severe weakness, headaches, or confusion following exposure to high temperatures.
Mr Mkpoutom called on community leaders, religious organisations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to support public enlightenment efforts by sharing accurate information on heat safety and encouraging environmentally responsible practices.
He emphasised the importance of protecting the environment through tree planting, preventing indiscriminate bush burning, and maintaining green spaces, while noting that collective efforts were necessary to promote environmental sustainability and community well-being.
