The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Akwa Ibom State Council has been commended for promoting environmental sustainability and cleanliness through effective reportage and public enlightenment.

Chairman of the Nigeria Cleanup Initiative, Mr. Anietie Effiong, gave the commendation when the organisation paid a courtesy visit to the NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council in Uyo yesterday.

Effiong said the media had a critical role to play in addressing environmental challenges by highlighting practical solutions, amplifying community voices, promoting successful environmental initiatives and encouraging citizens to participate in environmental action.

He said addressing environmental challenges required more than periodic cleanup exercises, stressing the need to build a culture where environmental cleanliness and protection are recognised as shared responsibilities among individuals, families, communities, institutions, businesses, government and civil society organisations.

He described the media as a powerful instrument for reaching, educating and mobilising the public on environmental issues.

Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, represented by the Vice Chairman, Comrade Margaret Moore, pledged the Union’s support for the Nigeria Cleanup Day initiative.

The NUJ Chairman said the Council would serve as a media partner in promoting community sanitation, responsible waste management, environmental education and public awareness.
