Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the ongoing erosion control, land reclamation and bridge construction project along Uyo Village Road in Uyo.
Governor Eno stated this on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after inspecting the project site, where he commended the contractor, AMITEC Construction, for the rapid progress recorded since the commencement of the project.
According to the Governor, the intervention has significantly transformed the area, which was previously characterised by a ravine and severe erosion.
He explained that the project was designed not only to control erosion but also to reclaim and open up more than 150 hectares of land for urban development.
“Well, you can see that the contractor is already getting the bridge and there is far improvement from where we met it. You can see that there is no ravine anymore here. You may find it difficult to believe that this was a ravine in this State for God knows how many years ago.
“So, we are good, and we are moving. This project will reclaim over 150 hectares of land that we want to use for Uyo downtown, and you will begin to have estates coming up here. That’s the plan,” he said.
The Governor said the reclaimed area would form part of plans to expand Uyo’s urban development, with residential estates and other infrastructure expected to emerge from the project.
The inspection also revealed the extent of the erosion threat previously posed to facilities along the corridor. Several public facilities, including the Uyo Primary Health Centre and the Governor’s Office Annex, among others, were at risk of being affected by the ravine had the intervention not been undertaken.
Governor Eno was accompanied on the inspection by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah; Executive Assistant/Chief Delivery Advisor, Mr. Aniefiok Johnson; Commissioner for Works, Prof. Eno Ibanga; Commissioner for Information, Elder Aniekan Umanah; and other government officials.
